Merger of BNFL, UKAEA and AWE Worker Epidemiology Studies into NRRW

UKHSA has published guidance on the planned merger of three separate nuclear-sector epidemiological cohorts — BNFL (approximately 42,000 radiation workers), UKAEA (approximately 75,000 radiation workers), and AWE (approximately 9,000 radiation workers) — into the National Registry for Radiation Workers (NRRW). The NRRW, established in 1975, is a national health surveillance registry for UK radiation workers. The merger aims to increase statistical power for radiation-risk research, enable internal-dose calculations for approximately 30,000 workers with bioassay data, and create a non-radiation worker comparison group to control for the healthy worker effect. Administrative efficiencies include reduced data-entry duplication, streamlined information governance, and improved data security through a single database. An NHS research ethics committee issued a favourable opinion in May 2021 (REC reference 21/SC/0063).

Pilot Study Evaluates Occupational Health Data for Radiation Effects

UKHSA has launched a pilot study examining whether occupational health records from Springfields Fuels Ltd contain usable data on lifestyle and health factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, hypertension, diabetes, and asbestos exposure. The study will analyse approximately 7,000 archived electronic records spanning up to 36 years of follow-up data, matched to workers on the National Registry of Radiation Workers. Results will inform whether health and lifestyle data can improve estimates of radiation-related disease risks.

NRRW Radiation Worker Cohort: Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer and Ischaemic Heart Disease Dose-Response Studies

UKHSA published two peer-reviewed analyses from the National Registry for Radiation Workers (NRRW) cohort. The first study found that basal cell carcinoma (BCC), not squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), is the non-melanoma skin cancer subtype most consistently associated with occupational low-dose radiation exposure, with elevated risk largely confined to workers monitored for internal exposure and those first employed before 1960. The second study examined dose-response curvature for ischaemic heart disease mortality, finding a linear-quadratic relationship with downward curvature above 0.4 Sv, partially explained by younger cohort members contributing most person-years at high dose.

National Registry Radiation Workers UK GDPR Privacy Notice

UKHSA published a privacy notice explaining how personal data of radiation workers is processed for the National Registry for Radiation Workers (NRRW). The notice covers data categories collected (identifying information, employment details, radiation exposure data, and special category health data), lawful basis under UK GDPR Article 6(1)(e), data sharing practices, security measures, and retention periods. Individual identifiable data is not shared outside UKHSA, though aggregated data may be shared internationally with collaborating scientists.

National Registry for Radiation Workers Guidance

UKHSA publishes guidance on the National Registry for Radiation Workers (NRRW), an epidemiological study established in 1976 to monitor health effects of long-term low-dose occupational exposure to ionising radiation among UK workers. The registry links occupational radiation exposure data with mortality and cancer incidence records to assess whether radiation protection regulations provide adequate protection for workers. The study currently holds records on over 270,000 workers from nuclear power generation, Ministry of Defence, British Nuclear Fuels Ltd, and UK Atomic Energy Authority sites.
