What changed
USPTO published patent application US20260090960A1 disclosing a method of vital pulp therapy using a bioactive capping material. The method involves drilling into a decayed tooth pulp, excavating infected pulp, and covering healthy pulp with a bioactive capping material prepared by mixing glass ionomer cement (GIC) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) at 1-10 wt.% with a solvent, followed by curing. The application lists four inventors: Mohammed ALGHARNI, Omar OMAR, Fatimah DAHLAWI, and Jehan ALHUMAID.
Patent applications do not create immediate compliance obligations for industry. Healthcare providers and medical device manufacturers should monitor patent prosecution progress to assess potential licensing requirements. Entities developing similar dental capping materials should conduct freedom-to-operate analyses before commercialization, as the patent, if granted, would provide exclusive rights to this specific composition and method.

Abstract
A method of vital pulp therapy with a bioactive capping material. The method includes drilling into a pulp of a tooth having decay to form a hole, then excavating infected pulp from the hole. The bioactive capping material is prepared by mixing glass ionomer cement (GIC) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) with a solvent. The method further includes covering healthy pulp in the tooth with the bioactive capping material and curing the bioactive capping material to form a cured capping material. The bioactive capping material includes KNO3 in an amount of 1 to 10 percent by weight (wt. %) based on the weight of the capping material.
