State Department Terrorist Designation of Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood
Summary
The Department of State has announced the designation of the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). This action imposes sanctions and restrictions on the designated entity.
What changed
The Department of State, through a notice published in the Federal Register, has officially designated the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT). This designation, effective March 16, 2026, signifies that the entity is subject to U.S. sanctions, including asset freezes and prohibitions on transactions.
Entities and individuals engaging with the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood must immediately cease all transactions and review their compliance programs to ensure adherence to U.S. sanctions regulations. Failure to comply can result in significant penalties, including fines and potential criminal charges. This designation requires immediate attention from compliance officers to update watchlists and transaction monitoring systems.
What to do next
- Update internal watchlists to include the Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood.
- Review and update transaction monitoring systems to flag any dealings with the designated entity.
- Consult with legal counsel regarding specific compliance obligations related to this designation.
Penalties
Asset freezes and prohibitions on transactions. Potential for fines and criminal charges for non-compliance.

Department of State
- [Public Notice: 12968] Acting under the authority of and in accordance with section 1(a)(ii)(A) of Executive Order 13224, as amended (“ E.O. 13224 ” or “Order”), I hereby determine that the person known as Sudanese Muslim Brotherhood (also known as Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan; Sudanese Islamic Movement; al-Bara Bin Malik Brigade; al-Bara' ibn Malik Brigade; al-Baraa bin Malik Battalion) is a foreign person who has committed or has attempted to commit, poses a significant risk of committing, or has participated in training to commit ( printed page 12664) acts of terrorism that threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States.
Consistent with the determination in section 10 of E.O. 13224 that prior notice to persons determined to be subject to the Order who might have a constitutional presence in the United States would render ineffectual the blocking and other measures authorized in the Order because of the ability to transfer funds instantaneously, I determine that no prior notice needs to be provided to any person subject to this determination who might have a constitutional presence in the United States, because to do so would render ineffectual the measures authorized in the Order.
This determination shall be published in the Federal Register.
Dated: March 8, 2026.
Marco Rubio,
Secretary of State, U.S. Department of State.
