DTN-manufactured inflators likely illegally imported; agency issues initial safety defect finding.
NHTSA issued an initial decision that DTN air bag inflators contain a safety defect and were likely illegally imported. The inflators, manufactured by Jilin Province Detiannuo Safety Technology Co., Ltd., have been linked to 12 ruptures in U.S. vehicles, posing serious injury or death risks to occupants.
A second initial decision issued April 7 confirmed the safety defect finding and noted that the inflators were imported by unknown parties in violation of federal safety regulations. NHTSA is investigating the import chain to identify responsible parties.
Vehicle owners with DTN-manufactured inflators should monitor NHTSA recall announcements and contact their dealers for inspection and replacement.
