The Colorado Division of Insurance issued an advisory for vehicle owners affected by contaminated gasoline and experiencing issues with their insurance carriers. The advisory provides guidance on filing claims and contact information for the Division of Insurance.

What changed

The Colorado Division of Insurance has issued a consumer advisory regarding contaminated gasoline that affected vehicles in the Denver Metro Area between January 7 and January 8, 2026. The advisory directs vehicle owners to first file claims with the retailer where the fuel was purchased. If consumers encounter difficulties with their auto insurance carriers when seeking coverage for damages caused by the contaminated fuel, they are instructed to contact the Division of Insurance.

Regulated entities, specifically insurance carriers, should be aware that the Division of Insurance is actively assisting consumers with claims related to this incident. Consumers are advised to report damage promptly, not drive compromised vehicles, and understand that comprehensive coverage should apply, subject to deductibles. The Division of Insurance provides a direct contact number and website for filing complaints, indicating a heightened level of oversight and potential for increased consumer inquiries and complaints regarding claims handling for this specific event.

What to do next

  1. Review internal processes for handling claims related to fuel contamination incidents.
  2. Ensure adjusters are aware of the advisory and the Division of Insurance's contact information for consumer complaints.
  3. Respond promptly and in accordance with policy terms to claims arising from the contaminated gasoline incident.

Consumer Advisory: If Your Vehicle Was Affected by Contaminated Gasoline and You Are Having Trouble with Your Insurance Carrier, Please Contact the Division of Insurance

DENVER - Between January 7 and January 8, unleaded gasoline contaminated with diesel fuel was sent to numerous gas stations in the Denver Metro Area. If your vehicle was affected by this contaminated gasoline, our partners at the Division of Oil & Public Safety encourage you to return to the gas station where the fuel was purchased to file a claim with the retailer. If you decide to file a claim with your own auto insurance carrier after contacting the retailer, and you are having trouble with a claim with your insurance company, please contact the Division of Insurance for assistance.

If you need to file a claim, keep the following information in mind:

  1. If you have comprehensive coverage, your insurer should pay for damages caused by the contaminated gasoline. You will be responsible for your comprehensive deductible.
  2. When you’re aware of damage to your engine or gas tank as a result of the contaminated gasoline, report it to your insurer as soon as possible.
  3. Do not continue to drive your vehicle if you believe it has been compromised.
  4. If you have rental car coverage, the insurer should cover the cost of a rental while your vehicle is being repaired, subject to your policy limits.
  5. If you have any questions or need to file a complaint related to your insurance coverage, contact the Division of Insurance at 303.894.7490 and choose Option 3. You can also file a complaint on our website. You are also able to file a complaint with Colorado’s Division of Oil & Public Safety (OPS). OPS’ investigation into the contaminated fuel remains ongoing. It has consolidated the list of gas stations that were impacted.
