Universal broach system for humeral implants - Patent Grant
Summary
The USPTO granted Patent US12594083B2 to Zimmer, Inc. for a universal broach system designed for preparing bone to receive humeral prosthesis anchors. The patent covers a distal broach component with radially extending cutting spokes and a proximal broach component with spacer spokes in an interval pattern. The 12-claim patent was filed on October 9, 2023.
What changed
Zimmer, Inc. has been granted a new patent for a universal broach system used in shoulder arthroplasty procedures. The invention comprises a distal broach component with cutting spokes extending radially from a body with a socket, and a proximal broach component with spacer spokes configured in a matching interval pattern. The design allows for consistent bone preparation for receiving prosthetic anchors in humeral implant procedures.
For medical device manufacturers and orthopedic implant companies, this patent establishes Zimmer's intellectual property rights in the universal broach system design space. Competitors developing similar bone preparation tools for shoulder reconstruction may need to design around these claims or seek licensing arrangements. Healthcare providers utilizing Zimmer's shoulder replacement systems may benefit from the improved instrumentation for more consistent surgical outcomes.

Abstract
A broach for preparing bone for receiving an anchor for a prosthesis comprises a body comprising a superior surface and a socket extending into the superior surface, and an anchoring component extending from the body comprising a spoke extending laterally from the body and a spoke tip extending proximally from the spoke above the superior surface. A system can comprise a distal broach component comprising a broach body, a socket extending into a superior surface of the broach body, and a plurality of cutting spokes extending radially from the broach body, each of the plurality of cutting spokes separated by an interval pattern, and a proximal broach component comprising a spacer body configured to attach to the superior surface of the broach body, and a plurality of spacer spokes extending radially from the spacer body, each of the plurality of spacer spokes separated by the interval pattern.
