Surgical Planning System for THA Using 3D Imaging

Email

Summary

USPTO published patent application US20260096854A1 for a surgical planning system enabling pre-operative planning for total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures. The system displays patient musculoskeletal structure images, co-registers them with spatial transformations, and renders 3D implants overlaid on images with safe zones indicating clinically accepted positioning ranges. The application enables surgeons to compare available implant options and their respective range-of-motion characteristics during pre-surgical planning.

What changed

USPTO published patent application US20260096854A1 disclosing methods and systems for pre-operative surgical planning for total hip arthroplasty. The invention provides tools for displaying patient musculoskeletal structure images across multiple planes, co-registering images using spatial transformations, and rendering 3D implants overlaid on images with graphical safe zones indicating clinically acceptable positioning ranges. The system also enables comparison of different implant options based on range-of-motion characteristics.

Manufacturers of surgical planning software, medical imaging systems, and hip implant manufacturers should monitor this patent for competitive intelligence and freedom-to-operate considerations. Healthcare providers utilizing such planning systems may benefit from understanding available technologies for THA procedures.

What to do next

  1. Monitor for patent prosecution updates
  2. Review claims for potential infringement concerns if developing similar surgical planning technology

Abstract

Disclosed are methods and systems to provided planning tools for surgery, particularly for THA. Images of musculoskeletal structure of a patient (e.g. associated with respective planes and in a same or different functional position) may be displayed together and via co-registration and spatial transformations, 3D implants or other objects may be rendered and overlaid in a same position correctly with respect to each image. Measures may be represented with respect to various planes associated with the respective image and/or with respect to an existing implant. A safe zone (graphical element) may be rendered and overlaid with respect to each displayed image to indicate a clinically accepted safe range of positions for the 3D implant. Different instances of implants having respective characteristics affecting range of motion may be available for use during a procedure. For a set of available implants minimal and maximal safe zones may be presented for planning assistance.
