Michigan Board of Nursing Authority Origins and Membership

The Michigan Board of Nursing publishes its authority origins and current membership composition. The Board was originally created under the Nurse Practice Act of 1909, with authority transferred to the Nursing Practice Act of 1967 and finally to the Public Health Code of 1978. The Public Health Code establishes the Board's powers including nurse licensure qualifications, education program standards, competency assurance, and disciplinary authority. The Board consists of 24 members: 9 registered nurses, 1 nurse midwife, 1 nurse anesthetist, 1 nurse practitioner, 3 licensed practical nurses, and 8 public members.
