Massachusetts Adopts Nurse Licensure Compact with 12-Month Implementation Timeline
On November 20, 2024, Governor Healey signed legislation adopting the Nurse Licensure Compact in Massachusetts. The Board of Registration in Nursing expects the implementation process to take approximately twelve months, though this estimate does not include the time required to obtain FBI approval for federal background checks, meaning the Board will not be ready to issue multistate licenses until implementation is fully complete. Nurses residing in other NLC states who hold multistate licenses are not authorized to practice in Massachusetts until the NLC implementation is finished; however, nurses seeking reciprocal licensure may still use Massachusetts's expedited conditional approval process during the interim period.
DCF Attestations Now Online with Electronic Consent Form
Starting May 5, 2025, nursing license applicants in Massachusetts must use a new electronic consent form for attestations regarding a history of supported abuse or neglect findings by the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF). The consent form is now built directly into the license application portal rather than requiring applicants to download, complete, and re-upload a separate PDF. This update streamlines the DCF background check procedure for both applicants and the Board of Registration in Nursing.
New Online Application Tracker for MA Nursing Licensure Is Live
The Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing launched a newly designed online application tracker on April 8, 2026, available to new applicants seeking nursing licensure and advanced practice authorization. The tracker provides real-time visibility into application review stages, estimated processing times, and status updates, along with contact resources for applicant inquiries. This is an administrative process improvement; no new compliance obligations, fees, or regulatory requirements are imposed on applicants.
