NCT07539597: CHW-Led Hypertension Study N=15, Single-Arm, Quasi-Experimental
Summary
NIH registered a new single-center, single-arm quasi-experimental feasibility study (NCT07539597) on ClinicalTrials.gov. The study will enroll 15 emergency department patients with asymptomatic hypertension and assess a community health worker (CHW)-led intervention addressing social determinants of health. Participants will complete SDOH surveys in REDCap with CHW-facilitated referrals to community organizations. Medical record review via EPIC and Healthix will evaluate healthcare utilization one year before and after the index ED visit.
What changed
A new clinical trial registration for a CHW-led hypertension management study was added to ClinicalTrials.gov. The quasi-experimental, single-arm study will evaluate feasibility and acceptability of addressing social determinants of health among emergency department patients with asymptomatic hypertension. Participants (N=15) will complete standardized SDOH surveys and receive community organization referrals facilitated by CHWs, with medical record review tracking healthcare utilization changes.
Healthcare providers and clinical investigators involved in ED-based hypertension management or community health worker programs may encounter this study's findings as a reference point for similar interventions. The use of REDCap, EPIC, and Healthix for data collection may be of interest to health systems evaluating comparable research infrastructure.

Innovative Approaches to Hypertension Management in High-Risk Emergency Department Populations
N/A NCT07539597 Kind: NA Apr 20, 2026
Abstract
This single-center, single-arm quasi-experimental study will assess the feasibility and acceptability of a community health worker (CHW)-led intervention to address social determinants of health (SDOH) among emergency department patients with hypertension. At enrollment, participants (N=15) will complete standardized SDOH surveys in REDCap, and CHWs will facilitate referrals to local community-based organizations that address identified social needs. With participant consent, the study will also include medical record review through EPIC and Healthix to evaluate healthcare utilization-including emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and outpatient encounters-during the one-year period before and after the index ED visit.
