What changed

Wisconsin DHS announced its tenth annual BigShot Awards, recognizing 162 healthcare providers for achieving specific childhood vaccination benchmarks across four award categories. Providers were honored for meeting thresholds including 90% of patients aged 24-36 months up to date on routine vaccine schedules, 80% of adolescents aged 13-17 up to date on Tdap, meningococcal, and HPV vaccines, 95% with at least one MMR dose by 24 months, and 95% with two MMR doses by age 6.

Healthcare providers in Wisconsin should be aware that the declining childhood vaccination rates cited by DHS may signal increased regulatory scrutiny or programmatic emphasis on immunization performance. While this award is voluntary and informational, it establishes public benchmarks that state health officials are using to frame the importance of vaccination coverage in protecting community health.

News Releases

For Immediate Release April 21, 2026 Contact DHS Media, 608-266-1683 The Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) has announced its annual BigShot awardees, celebrating 162 Wisconsin health care providers who are committed to protecting children's health by ensuring they are up to date on childhood vaccinations that prevent serious diseases such as measles, pertussis, meningitis, and HPV.

"We are pleased to recognize the crucial work of these vaccinators in supporting the health of Wisconsin's children," said Wisconsin Immunization Program Director Stephanie Schauer. "This is an important achievement, especially as we continue to see childhood vaccinations declining in Wisconsin and a resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases, like measles."

This is the tenth year of the annual BigShot awards, which are part of DHS' work to respond to health needs statewide by supporting programs and services that protect the health of entire communities. There are four categories of awards going to providers who have:

  • 90% or more of patients from 24-36 months up to date on their routine childhood vaccine schedule of at least 4 doses of DTaP, 3 doses of poliovirus, 1 dose of MMR, 3 doses of Hib, 3 doses of HepB, 1 dose of varicella, and 4 doses of PCV.
  • 80% or more of patients between 13 and 17 up to date on Tdap, Meningococcal vaccines, and who have completed the human papilloma virus (HPV) series.
  • 95% or more of patients with at least 1 dose of MMR vaccine by 24 months.
  • 95% or more of patients with 2 doses of MMR vaccine by age 6. Through community partnerships, education, and innovative outreach, this year's recipients have helped make vaccines more accessible and ensured Wisconsin families have the information and support they need to make informed decisions about their health.
