Governor Signs $11.1B Budget, Capital Outlay, Tax Package
Governor Appoints John Bernitz to Eleventh Judicial District
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham appointed John William Bernitz as Eleventh Judicial District Attorney, Division II, serving McKinley County. The appointment is effective immediately and will last until the next general election as provided by law. Bernitz previously served as Chief Deputy District Attorney since October 2025 and brings over two decades of prosecutorial experience.
Governor Lujan Grisham Departs for Spain Summit
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham departed on April 6, 2026, for Madrid, Spain, to participate in an educational and business outreach summit hosted by the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino. The governor will examine shared U.S.-Spain history and meet with Spanish business leaders regarding energy innovation and emerging technology investment opportunities. Lt. Governor Howie Morales will serve as acting governor until Governor Lujan Grisham returns on April 15.
Governor Appoints Two Members to State Transportation Commission
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced two recess appointments to the New Mexico State Transportation Commission: Debra P. Hicks (District 2) and Anthony K. Tanner (District 6). Both appointments were effective April 13, 2026, and will expire at the adjournment of the first session of the 58th New Mexico State Legislature on March 20, 2027. The appointments fill vacancies left by Gary Tonjes (District 2, resigned December 2025) and Charles Lundstrom (District 6, served since March 2019).
