Mississippi BEAD Final Proposal Approved, $508M, 93k Households
The U.S. Department of Commerce's NTIA granted final federal approval to Mississippi's BEAD program on February 9, 2026. The Office of Broadband Expansion and Accessibility of Mississippi (BEAM) will administer over $508 million in preliminary awards to twelve internet providers to reach 93,000 unserved households. Participating providers will contribute an additional $321 million in private funding for the broadband buildout.
Reeves Requests Major Disaster Declaration for Winter Storms Impacting Mississippi Counties
Governor Tate Reeves requested a Major Disaster Declaration from FEMA for Mississippi counties impacted by severe winter storms from January 23-27, 2026. The request includes individual assistance, disaster unemployment benefits, and public assistance for local governments including debris removal. The declaration request may be amended to include additional counties as damage assessments continue.
Mississippi Joins Trump Foster Care Pilot Initiative
Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced on March 10, 2026, that the state is participating in the Trump Administration's 'A Home for Every Child' pilot initiative. The state-federal partnership aims to strengthen the foster care system by expanding foster home availability, increasing kinship placements, and strengthening prevention services that help families remain together safely.
S&P Upgrades Mississippi Credit Outlook to Stable
S&P Global Credit Ratings has upgraded Mississippi's credit outlook from 'negative' to 'stable.' This positive credit development indicates improved fiscal conditions and may result in lower borrowing costs for the state. The upgrade follows record investment earnings and responsible fiscal management under Governor Reeves and Treasurer McRae.
Amazon Invests $25B in Mississippi, Creating 2,000 Jobs
Amazon announced plans to invest an additional $12 billion in central Mississippi, bringing its total planned capital investment in the state to $25 billion. The announcement includes an $11 billion expansion of data center operations in Madison County (700 new jobs) and a $1 billion project in Clinton (100 new jobs). Combined with prior announcements, Amazon expects to create more than 2,000 jobs in Mississippi. Mississippi Major Economic Impact Authority funds and local government entities are supporting these expansions.
