Public Nominations Open for The King's Honours

Public invited to submit names for Nominations for The King’s Honours

Nominations are currently being sought from members of the public for individuals they would like to be considered for: (i) (ii) an award as part of His Majesty The King’s Overseas and International Honours List and an award as part of the local award of the King’s Certificate and Badge of Honour.

The OVERSEAS AND INTERNATIONAL HONOURS LIST is made up of substantive awards for United Kingdom citizens and citizens of a Commonwealth country of which HM The King is Head of State. Nominations are decided by an honours committee in the United Kingdom. The committee’s recommendations go to the Prime Minister and then to The King, who awards the honour.

There are different levels and types of awards (https://www.gov.uk/honours/types-of-honours-and-awards). A general guide on level is:

• Knight or Dame (KBE/DBE): awarded for having a major contribution in any activity (usually at national level). Other people working in the nominee’s area will see their contribution as inspirational and significant, requiring commitment over a longperiod of time.
• Commander of the British Empire (CBE): awarded for having a prominent but lesser role at national level through achievement or service to the community, or a highly distinguished, innovative contribution to any area.
• Officer of the British Empire (OBE): awarded for having a major role in any activity through achievement or service to the community, including people whose work has made them known in their chosen area.
• Member of the British Empire (MBE): awarded for outstanding achievement or service to the community which has had a long-term, significant impact and stands out as an example to others.
• British Empire Medal (BEM): awarded for a “hands-on” service to the community. This could be a long-term charitable or voluntary activity or innovative work or a relatively short duration (3 to 4 years) that has made a significant difference. Presentations of BEMs are made locally.The KING’S CERTIFICATE AND BADGE OF HONOUR is awarded locally to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public life or committed themselves to serving and helping Bermuda over a sustained period. Where possible, nominations should be for those who are still active in their area of focus, may have recently retired, or had a recent significant achievement.

Nominations are considered by a local honours committee, who make recommendations to the Governor via the Premier.

Previous recipients for both the Overseas and International Honours List and the King’s Certificate and Badge of Honour have received honours for achievements like:

• making a difference to their community or field of work;
• enhancing Bermuda’s reputation;
• long-term voluntary service;
• innovation and entrepreneurship;
• improving life for people less able to help themselves; or

• displaying moral courage.
  Honours are awarded to individuals involved in activities such as:

• Community, voluntary and local services

• Arts and media

• Health

• Sport

• Education

• Science and technology

• Business and the economy

• Civil or political service
  How to nominate

Anyone can nominate someone for an honour. Nominees should never be made aware that they are being nominated or considered. Nomination forms can be downloaded from www.gov.bm/governor-bermuda.

Nominations must be accompanied by two letters of support. These letters should ideally provide information to add to or strengthen the information in the nomination. Letters and nominations from non-family members are more likely to carry greater weight with the Committee. Completed nomination forms, together with two letters of support, must be received no later than Friday 1 May 2026 via email to governmenthouse@gov.bm.
