What changed

The Single-Use Plastics Act 2026 was tabled in Bermuda's House of Assembly, which would establish a regulatory framework for transitioning away from harmful single-use plastics through a phased approach based on consultation and scientific evidence. This announcement confirms the Government's intent to regulate single-use plastics but has not yet created binding compliance obligations.\n\nAffected businesses, particularly manufacturers and retailers of single-use plastic products, should monitor legislative progress and prepare for anticipated public consultation opportunities. The Government has indicated stakeholder input will be sought before implementation, allowing businesses to provide feedback on the proposed framework.

Minister Supports Bermuda College Screening on Plastic Pollution

16 April, 2026

The Minister of Public Works and Environment, the Hon Jaché Adams, JP, MP, attended a screening of The Plastic Detox Documentary at Bermuda College last Friday (10 April), in support of ongoing community efforts to raise awareness about plastic pollution and its wider effects on Bermuda.

Hosted by the Bermuda College Eco Club, the event featured a documentary screening and panel discussion, with proceeds supporting Eco Club students travelling to the Bahamas in May for a sustainability stewardship opportunity.

Minister Adams said the documentary was a clear and sobering reminder that plastic pollution is not only an environmental issue, but one that also raises wider questions about health, responsibility and the kind of island Bermuda wants to be for future generations.

The Minister stated: “I was pleased to attend this important event and to support the conversation taking place around plastic pollution and its implications for Bermuda.

“I thank the Bermuda College Eco Club for organising the screening, Bermuda College for hosting it, and Beyond Plastic for its advocacy and continued engagement on this issue.”

Last month, Minister Adams tabled the Single-Use Plastics Act 2026 in the House of Assembly, which looks to establish Bermuda’s transition away from the most harmful single-use plastics through consultation, science and phased implementation.

“The Government has already introduced legislation to create the framework for Bermuda’s approach to single-use plastics,” the Minister noted.

“If approved by the Legislature, the next step will be to begin public consultation so that Bermuda residents, businesses and other stakeholders can have their say on the path forward.

“This is an issue that requires public awareness, public engagement and responsible action. Events such as this help to keep that conversation moving in a constructive direction.”
