Oral Health Symposium 2026: Advancing Dental Education

The Department of Health’s Oral Health Section successfully hosted the second Bermuda Oral Health Symposium on March 19 and 20, 2026, at the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute. Held under the theme “ Advancing Oral Health with New & Innovative Approaches ,” this year’s symposium brought together local and international experts to explore the latest developments shaping the future of dental care and public health.

“The Oral Health Symposium provided attendees with a dynamic opportunity to learn from one another, deepen shared understanding, and strengthen the partnerships that will shape the future of oral health in Bermuda,” said Minister of Health, Kim Wilson. “I want to thank Dr. Joy Pickstock, our Chief Dental Officer, and the entire Oral Health team for organising this exceptional cross‑border event.

“The Bermuda Dental Scientific Symposium offers an important moment to reflect on the progress being made across our island. Over the past three years, we have seen real growth in dental services across both the public and private sectors, supported by a renewed focus on innovation, accessibility, and high‑quality care. This event also reminds us that oral health is not separate from overall well‑being; it is an essential part of it. When we care for the mouth, we care for the whole person.”

The 2026 programme featured presentations on medical emergencies in the dental setting, paediatric dentistry, ethics in dentistry, artificial intelligence in dentistry, oral surgery, radiology, public health, and periodontics. Attendees also engaged with exhibitor booths showcasing new technologies, products, and current research supporting modern clinical practice.

Chief Dental Officer Dr. Joy Pickstock commented: “The event welcomed dentists, hygienists, auxiliaries, laboratory technicians, and other oral health professionals committed to advancing their practice. It was productive and engaging and provided a space for oral health professionals from around the region to create meaningful dialogue about our profession, while networking and re-establishing connections. The conference highlighted the need for the local dental association for further collaborative efforts.”

This year’s keynote address was delivered by Dr Brian Swann, who spoke on global developments in oral health and the growing intersections between dentistry and wider healthcare systems.

The two‑day event was delivered in a hybrid format, offering both in‑person and virtual participation. More than 140 dental professionals, students, and industry partners attended sessions focused on strengthening clinical practice, enhancing patient outcomes, and integrating emerging technologies into oral healthcare.

In the presence of family and friends, winners and participants in the recent Oral Health Poster competition were awarded their prizes and certificates during the Symposium.
