Summary

The UK Secretary of State has amended the National Minimum Wage Regulations 2015, increasing various minimum wage rates effective April 1, 2026. The national living wage for workers aged 21 and over will increase to £12.71 per hour, with other age-based and apprenticeship rates also seeing increases.

What changed

The National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Regulations 2026, made on March 19, 2026, and effective April 1, 2026, amend the National Minimum Wage Regulations 2015. Key changes include an increase in the national living wage for workers aged 21 and over from £12.21 to £12.71 per hour. Additionally, the minimum wage for workers aged 18-20 will rise from £10.00 to £10.85, the rate for workers under 18 will increase from £7.55 to £8.00, and the apprenticeship rate will also rise from £7.55 to £8.00. The accommodation offset amount for provided living accommodation will increase from £10.66 to £11.10 per day.

Employers across England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland must ensure their payroll systems are updated to reflect these new minimum wage rates by April 1, 2026. Failure to comply with these updated rates could result in enforcement actions and penalties for wage underpayment. Compliance officers should review their compensation structures and update employee pay rates accordingly to avoid violations.

What to do next

  1. Update payroll systems to reflect new minimum wage rates effective April 1, 2026.
  2. Review employment contracts and pay scales for all affected workers.
  3. Ensure compliance with the increased national living wage and other minimum wage rates.
