NAGPRA Inventory Completion: Kansas State Historical Society Human Remains
Summary
The National Park Service published a NAGPRA notice announcing the Kansas State Historical Society has completed its inventory of human remains representing one individual. The KSHS determined cultural affiliation with the Kaw Nation, Oklahoma and the Shawnee Tribe. Repatriation may occur on or after May 11, 2026.
What changed
The Kansas State Historical Society completed its NAGPRA-required inventory of human remains (UBS 1998-16) from Wyandotte County, KS, identifying one individual of Native American ancestry. The Society determined cultural affiliation with the Kaw Nation, Oklahoma and the Shawnee Tribe based on geographical location and acquisition history. Written requests for repatriation may be submitted by the identified tribes, lineal descendants, or other tribes/organizations demonstrating cultural affiliation by preponderance of evidence.
Affected parties include the Kaw Nation and Shawnee Tribe, who have priority repatriation rights, as well as any lineal descendants or other culturally affiliated Native Hawaiian organizations who may submit competing claims. Institutions holding Native American human remains or funerary objects should ensure NAGPRA compliance inventories and cultural affiliation determinations are current and notices are published promptly.
What to do next
- Monitor repatriation timeline
- Prepare for potential repatriation requests from affiliated tribes

Abstract of Information Available
Human remains representing, at least, one individual have been identified from Wyandotte County, KS (UBS 1998-16). No associated funerary objects are present. Partial remains from Bonner Springs were given to law enforcement and originally considered a forensic case in 1998. After it was determined that they were not, they were transferred to KSHS in 2004. To our knowledge, no known hazardous substances were used to treat any of the human remains. ( printed page 17994)
Cultural Affiliation
Based on the information available and the results of consultation, cultural affiliation is reasonably identified by the geographical location or acquisition history of the human remains described in this notice.
Determinations
The KSHS has determined that:
- The human remains described in this notice represent the physical remains of one individual of Native American ancestry.
- There is a connection between the human remains described in this notice and the Kaw Nation, Oklahoma and the Shawnee Tribe.
Requests for Repatriation
Written requests for repatriation of the human remains in this notice must be sent to the authorized representative identified in this notice under ADDRESSES. Requests for repatriation may be submitted by:
Any one or more of the Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations identified in this notice.
Any lineal descendant, Indian Tribe, or Native Hawaiian organization not identified in this notice who shows, by a preponderance of the evidence, that the requestor is a lineal descendant or an Indian Tribe or Native Hawaiian organization with cultural affiliation.
Repatriation of the human remains described in this notice to a requestor may occur on or after May 11, 2026. If competing requests for repatriation are received, the KSHS must determine the most appropriate requestor prior to repatriation. Requests for joint repatriation of the human remains are considered a single request and not competing requests. The KSHS is responsible for sending a copy of this notice to the Indian Tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations identified in this notice and any other consulting parties.
