NAGPRA Inventory Completion Rescission - Metropolitan Park District of Toledo Area
Summary
The National Park Service published a notice on behalf of the Metropolitan Park District of Toledo Area rescinding three prior NAGPRA Notices of Inventory Completion published in 2002, 2003, and 2009. The rescinded notices covered human remains and associated funerary objects from Lucas County, OH. Transfer of these items has not occurred, and twelve tribal nations must be notified of this rescission.
What changed
The Metropolitan Park District of the Toledo Area is rescinding two Notices of Inventory Completion (NICs) and one NIC Correction originally published in the Federal Register on July 11, 2002 (67 FR 45997-45998), July 9, 2003 (68 FR 41014), and December 9, 2009 (74 FR 65148-65149). All paragraphs of these notices are deleted in their entirety. The human remains and associated funerary objects originated from Lucas County, Ohio, and transfer of control has not occurred.
Regulated entities holding Native American human remains and funerary objects under prior NAGPRA inventory notices should verify whether their holdings were covered by the rescinded notices and update their records accordingly. The Metropolitan Park District must notify twelve specified tribal nations (including the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe, Delaware Nation, Eastern Shawnee Tribe, and others) that these notices have been rescinded. Contact for repatriation requests: Shannon Hughes at shannon.hughes@metroparkstoledo.com.
What to do next
- Verify whether any holdings were covered by the rescinded 2002, 2003, or 2009 NAGPRA notices
- Update inventory records to reflect the rescinded status of prior notices
