Botchwey Marks One Year With Strategic Plan, Business Summit

Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey marks one year in office on April 1, 2026, with key achievements including delivery of the Commonwealth Strategic Plan 2025–2030 and the inaugural Commonwealth Business Summit held in Namibia in June 2025. The announcement highlights climate finance mobilization through the Commonwealth Climate Finance Access Hub unlocking nearly US$600 million, partnerships with the IMF training public debt managers from 16 Caribbean countries, and over 500 youth leaders engaged across Malaysia and Namibia. The Secretary-General's first Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) is scheduled for November 2026 in Antigua and Barbuda.

Joint Assessment Mission to Sierra Leone Reviews Agreement for National Unity Implementation

The International Moral Guarantors—ECOWAS, the UN Office for West Africa and the Sahel, and the Commonwealth Secretariat—issued a communiqué following their third joint assessment mission to Sierra Leone from 13 to 20 April 2026. The mission reviewed implementation of the Agreement for National Unity signed between Sierra Leone's government and the All People's Congress on 18 October 2023. Co-leaders included H.E. Fatoumata Tambajang, H.E. Ambassador Tanmaya Lal, and H.E. Barrie Freeman.

Azerbaijan and Commonwealth Launch US$2M Environmental SIDS Funding

The Commonwealth Secretariat and the Government of Azerbaijan have launched two flagship projects under the COP29 Presidency Commonwealth Fund for Small Island Developing States, disbursing an initial US$2 million from a US$10 million grant announced in 2024. Of this, US$1 million will fund implementation of the Apia Commonwealth Ocean Declaration and delivery of AI and space data solutions for climate action, while the remaining US$1 million will be allocated as grants to five Commonwealth SIDS. The funding represents the first phase of a partnership grounded in a Joint Declaration signed in Nukuʻalofa, Tonga on 27 August 2024, with further funding to be deployed over five years.
