What changed
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's Cosmetology and Barbering Board has announced enhanced continuing education requirements for barber and cosmetology license renewals effective September 1, 2025. Licensees licensed fewer than 15 years must complete 4 hours of approved CE including 1 hour of sanitation, 2 hours of barbering or cosmetology related information, and 1 hour of human trafficking prevention. Those holding their license for 15 or more years face reduced requirements of 2 hours covering sanitation and human trafficking prevention. Individuals holding both a barber and cosmetology license may use CE completed for one license to satisfy requirements for the other license.
Barbers and cosmetologists in Texas should verify their license tenure before renewal and ensure they schedule appropriate CE courses with approved providers. Dual license holders should note that they must complete the full 4-hour requirement until both licenses have been held for 15 years or more. The requirements apply to all Texas-licensed barbers and cosmetologists seeking license renewal.
