In Case You Missed It: Nevada leads the country in election administration, ranking #2 in 2024 MIT Election Performance Index
CARSON CITY, NV – New data from the MIT Election Data and Science Lab shows Nevada leads the nation in election administration. Nevada ranked #2 out of all 50 states, based on the state’s accessibility to the ballot box, ballot security and processing, the security of election systems and voter registration processes.
“MIT’s latest data confirms what I’ve been saying all along. Nevada is a national leader in running safe, secure and accessible elections,” said Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar. “Since I took office in 2023, we have strengthened cybersecurity, improved processes for in-person and mail voting, and increased transparency for the public. I’m proud of the work being done across our state to expand access to the ballot box while maintaining strong election security, and I’m grateful to the election officials and poll workers who make this work possible every day.”
The 2024 Election Performance Index evaluates all 50 states using 19 indicators measuring election administration, including voter registration, ballot processing, voter access, and overall system performance.
Key findings from the 2024 report:
- Nevada voter turnout is 65.8%, compared to the 65.03% nationwide average
- Rate of registration/ballot problems is 2.72%, below the nationwide average of 4.7%
- Military and Overseas Voters: More military and overseas citizens returned their ballots than across the country on average. - Disability Access: Nevada showed a 0% difference in turnout with voters who reported a disability and those who didn’t. The national average showed a negative –7% difference in turnout between people who reported having one of six disabilities and those who reported having none of those.
- Voting Wait Time: Nevada’s average wait-time for in-person voting is 8.4 minutes, below the national average of 21.2 minutes.
- Election Audits: Post-election audits and risk-limiting audits are required. Nevada is only one of only 6 jurisdictions requiring risk-limiting audits.
