August 2025 Newsletter: New Licensees, AED Rules for PEP Procedures, CE Requirements
Summary
The Mississippi State Board of Optometry published its August 2025 newsletter announcing newly licensed optometrists from the July examination. The Rules Spotlight section addresses AED requirements for PEP-certified optometrists performing prescriptive authority procedures, requiring in-person AED training and accessible AED devices per Miss. Code Ann. §§ 73-19-9, 73-19-153. The newsletter also reminds licensees of 2025 continuing education and CPR requirements, with proposed rules awaiting approval by the Occupational Licensing Review Commission.
What changed
The newsletter announces the registration of new optometrists licensed in July 2025 and spotlights AED requirements for PEP-certified optometrists performing prescriptive authority procedures. Affected optometrists must complete in-person, hands-on AED training and ensure AED devices are readily accessible at their practice locations per Miss. Code Ann. §§ 73-19-9, 73-19-153. The newsletter also clarifies 2025 continuing education requirements, noting that CPR training has reverted to in-person format and providing guidance on manually entering two-year CE credits in the online renewal portal.
Optometrists in Mississippi should verify their AED training compliance if PEP-certified and review Rules 4.1 and 4.2 for CE requirements. Those with expiring CPR or DEA certifications should complete renewal before the two-year reporting deadline. Prospective preceptors may apply using forms on the board website for October meeting consideration.
