Governor Gianforte Honors Montana Youth Challenge Academy Staff with Outstanding Service Award

DILLON, Mont. – Governor Greg Gianforte recently honored Michelle Nelon and Ben Stewart of the Montana Youth Challenge Academy (MYCA) with the Governor’s Outstanding Service Award, recognizing their decades-long career of supporting Montana’s youth.

“When public servants dedicate their careers to helping others succeed, the impact reaches far beyond a single moment,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Michelle and Ben have spent decades investing in Montana’s young people, helping them build discipline, confidence, and a path forward. Their commitment has changed lives and strengthened communities across our state.”

Michelle Nelon, who will mark 20 years with MYCA in July 2026, serves as Post-Residential Coordinator, leading the academy’s mentor program for cadets during the 12 months following the residential phase. She is responsible for recruiting, screening, and training mentors, ensuring cadets continue progressing after graduation.

Under her leadership, MYCA consistently exceeds national averages for long-term placement. Nelon also serves on the National Training Committee for Youth Challenge Programs, representing post-residential efforts and helping uphold high standards nationwide.

Ben Stewart has dedicated 27 years to MYCA and has served in multiple roles, including cadre instructor, team leader, academic counselor, and Lead Counselor. Throughout his career, he has been a steady and trusted presence, mentoring cadets and supporting staff across the academy.

Stewart is known for building strong relationships with cadets, their families, and communities across Montana. His calm demeanor, compassion, and willingness to go the extra mile have made a lasting impact on the program. He is set to retire in 2027 after nearly three decades of service.

The Governor’s Outstanding Service Award was created to recognize state employees who go above and beyond in service to the people of Montana.
