What changed
The Nebraska Public Service Commission released a reminder announcing the April 22, 2026 deadline for eligible Black Hills Energy customers in Rate Area 5 to actively select a natural gas supplier under the Choice Gas Program. The program covers the western two-thirds of Nebraska and offers customers a choice among eight participating natural gas suppliers, with prices and terms that may offer savings compared to default service.
Eligible customers who do not make an active selection by the deadline will be automatically assigned a supplier by the program. Customers in eastern Nebraska and customers of other gas utilities are not eligible. Black Hills Energy will continue as the local distribution utility regardless of supplier selection, handling physical delivery, meter reading, billing, and emergency services. Customers should contact Black Hills at (877) 245-3506 to confirm eligibility.

PSC ISSUES REMINDER ABOUT
CHOICE GAS DEADLINE
LINCOLN – The Nebraska Public Service Commission
(PSC) is reminding eligible Black Hills Energy customers
that they have one week remaining to choose a natural gas
supplier as part of the Nebraska Choice Gas Program.
Through April 22, residential and commercial customers
located in the Black Hills Rate Area 5 service territory –
roughly the western two-thirds of the state – can select an
independent supplier to provide their natural gas for the
upcoming program year at prices or terms that may save
money.
Black Hills customers in eastern Nebraska as well as
customers of other natural gas utilities are not eligible to
participate in the Choice Gas Program. To confirm eligibility
for the program, customers should contact Black Hills at
(877) 245-3506.
Eligible customers who do not choose a supplier will be
assigned one.
“The program is designed to ensure competitive pricing and
to give consumers greater control over their energy costs
each year,” said PSC Vice Chair Kevin Stocker, whose
district includes much of western Nebraska. “We encourage
customers to carefully review their options and choose the
supplier and pricing plan that best fit their needs.”
Under the 2026 Choice Gas Program, customers may
consider plans from eight participating natural gas suppliers.
Black Hills remains the local distribution utility that delivers
the natural gas to customers’ homes and businesses, reads
meters, bills accounts and handles emergencies.
In all, nearly 81,000 customers were eligible for the program
in 2025. About 54% of those customers made an active
selection.
More information about the program is available here.
