USGS Production Estimate Notice - Request for Comment
Summary
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking public comment on the renewal of an information collection regarding production estimates for nonfuel minerals. The comment period closes on March 24, 2026. This renewal aims to continue collecting data for annual commodity reports and the 'Mineral Commodity Summaries' publication.
What changed
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has issued a notice requesting public comment on the proposed renewal, without change, of an information collection concerning production estimates for nonfuel minerals. This collection, identified by OMB Control Number 1028-0065 and utilizing USGS Forms 9-4042-A and 9-4124-A, is essential for the USGS's minerals information mission. The data gathered supports annual commodity reports and the 'Mineral Commodity Summaries' publication, providing critical information to various government agencies, industry, academia, and the public.
Interested parties are invited to submit comments by March 24, 2026, to help the USGS assess the necessity, utility, accuracy, and clarity of the information collection. The agency is particularly interested in comments addressing how to enhance the quality and minimize the burden of this collection, including the potential use of information technology. While the collection is a renewal without change, comments are crucial for the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB) approval process and for ensuring the information remains relevant and the reporting burden is minimized.
What to do next
- Submit comments on the proposed information collection renewal by March 24, 2026.
- Review the Information Collection Request (ICR) for details on data requirements and reporting burden.
- Consider providing feedback on the utility, clarity, and methods to minimize the burden of the collection.
