Hino Motors $1.6B Settlement for False Emission Data

EPA, DOJ, and California Air Resources Board announced a global settlement exceeding $1.6 billion with Hino Motors, Ltd. and its U.S. subsidiaries for Clean Air Act violations involving fraudulent emissions testing data submitted between 2010 and 2019. The settlement includes a $525 million civil penalty, a $521.76 million criminal fine, a five-year term of probation during which Hino is prohibited from importing diesel engines into the United States, and a vehicle recall program for model year 2017-2019 engines. On January 10, 2025, EPA voided the certificates of conformity for approximately 105,000 heavy-duty highway engines and 5,700 nonroad compression-ignition engines — the largest voiding action ever taken by EPA.

Lowe's Home Centers LLC RRP Settlement Summary

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Justice announced a $12.5 million settlement with Lowe's Home Centers, LLC on November 25, 2025, resolving alleged violations of the Toxic Substances Control Act's Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. EPA found noncompliance at over 250 home renovation jobs in 23 states, primarily between 2019 and 2021, including failures to provide lead exposure education, use certified renovators, document lead testing, and contain dust. Lowe's must now implement a comprehensive electronic compliance system, conduct at least 4,000 jobsite inspections, use certified firms and renovators, and submit three years of compliance reports to EPA.

Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund Settlement: $668M Cleanup with 100+ Parties

EPA, DOJ, and the State of Washington reached a settlement with over 100 potentially responsible parties on March 4, 2026, to address hazardous substance releases into the Lower Duwamish Waterway, a five-mile segment of Seattle's only river. The Lower Duwamish Waterway Group (Boeing, City of Seattle, King County) will design and perform EPA's selected cleanup plan for approximately 177 acres through dredging and capping over at least 10 years. The settlement value is approximately $668 million, with $130 million from other private responsible parties and $140 million from settling federal agencies.
