Population Trends of Breeding Birds in the UK, to 2025
JNCC published the annual Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) official statistics on 9 April 2026, reporting population trends for over 100 common breeding bird species across the UK and its constituent countries to 2025. The BBS is a Partnership jointly funded by BTO, RSPB, and JNCC and relies on thousands of volunteer data recorders. The results inform conservation priorities, action, and reporting, providing an important indicator of countryside health.
UK Butterfly Trends, 2026 Release, Data to 2025
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) published its annual point-of-first-release statistics on UK butterfly abundance on 27 March 2026, covering data through 2025. The statistics are derived from the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (UKBMS), which relies on volunteer-collected data and is jointly organised and funded by Butterfly Conservation, the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, British Trust for Ornithology, and JNCC. These trends feed into UK biodiversity indicators and support reporting on country biodiversity strategies.
Indicators of Soil Health for England, 2026 Release
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) published the 2026 Indicators of Soil Health for England release on 25 March 2026, providing national-scale baseline data on soil health defined as soils' contribution to ecosystem service delivery. The release includes interim data on soils' influence on surface water flood prevention, soil carbon storage, and sustainable arable crop provision, presented across two dimensions: inherent soil capabilities and management effectiveness for ecosystem service delivery.
UK Breeding Seabird Population Changes 1986–2024
JNCC has published official statistics from the Seabird Monitoring Programme covering UK breeding seabird population changes from 1986 to 2024. The statistics are compiled from data collected by the SMP, a partnership jointly funded by JNCC and BTO in association with the RSPB, and include UK abundance change and productivity figures with country-level breakdowns where possible. This is a non-regulatory statistical release containing no compliance obligations or enforcement implications for businesses.
