Summary

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in Pune heard the environmental case Paryavaran Bachav Samity vs. Union of India. The NGT granted the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) two weeks for a final reply affidavit and allowed respondents to submit additional documents, setting the next hearing for June 3, 2026.

What changed

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), Western Zone Bench, Pune, heard Original Application No. 62/2019(WZ) concerning environmental issues. During the hearing on March 23, 2026, the Tribunal noted that respondent no.1, the MoEF&CC, had not yet filed its reply affidavit despite a previous order. The NGT granted MoEF&CC two weeks as a final opportunity to file the affidavit. Additionally, respondents 7 & 8 were permitted to submit additional documents concerning recent developments, subject to service on other parties who may file rebuttals within a week.

This procedural order indicates ongoing litigation and the need for parties to submit their evidence and responses. Compliance officers involved with environmental regulations in Gujarat or related to the MoEF&CC should monitor the progress of this case, particularly the upcoming filings and the next hearing date of June 3, 2026. While no direct compliance actions are mandated for external entities by this specific order, the case highlights the NGT's active role in environmental oversight and the importance of timely responses in regulatory proceedings.

What to do next

  1. Monitor case progress for Paryavaran Bachav Samity vs. Union of India (OA No. 62/2019(WZ)).
  2. Ensure timely submission of any required affidavits or documents by relevant parties.
  3. Prepare for potential follow-up actions based on NGT directives after the June 3, 2026 hearing.
