What changed

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has issued an order in the case of Harish Yadav vs State of Uttar Pradesh, requiring the Vice Chairman of the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to appear virtually. This action stems from the need for the GDA's reply regarding water usage for construction. Additionally, the tribunal directed the respondent project proponents to disclose the source of water used for construction and other purposes before obtaining permission for groundwater extraction, referencing a prior order from July 1, 2025.

This order implies that compliance officers for entities involved in construction projects within Uttar Pradesh, particularly those overseen by the GDA, must ensure proper documentation and disclosure of water sources, especially concerning groundwater extraction. Failure to comply with the directions regarding water source disclosure could lead to further scrutiny or penalties. The case is listed for further hearing on July 14, 2026.

What to do next

  1. Ensure Vice Chairman, Ghaziabad Development Authority, appears virtually.
  2. Disclose source of water used for construction and other purposes prior to groundwater extraction permits.
