National Green Tribunal: BBMP Sewage Flow Redirect Hearing
Summary
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) heard an application concerning sewage flow redirection in Kodichikkanahalli, India. The tribunal directed the correction of a respondent's description and requested old revenue records regarding a water body's area and encroachments. The next hearing is scheduled for July 15, 2026.
What changed
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) addressed Original Application No. 1219/2024, concerning a news item about the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) directing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to redirect sewage flow. During the hearing on March 24, 2026, the tribunal allowed a correction to the description of Respondent No. 6, the Deputy Commissioner, Bengaluru Urban District. It also noted the construction of a wall by the lake and requested the BBMP to file a response. Furthermore, Respondent No. 6 was directed to submit old revenue records detailing the water body's area and any encroachments.
This proceeding indicates ongoing regulatory scrutiny over municipal waste management and environmental protection in Bengaluru. Regulated entities, particularly municipal bodies and environmental agencies, should monitor this case for potential directives regarding sewage management and water body protection. The tribunal has scheduled the next hearing for July 15, 2026, and has requested specific documentation. Failure to comply with these directives could lead to further enforcement actions or penalties.
What to do next
- File amended memo of parties with corrected respondent description.
- Submit reply regarding the wall construction by the lake within four weeks.
- Place on record concerned old revenue records indicating water body area and encroachments.
