Lithium ion secondary battery and method for producing same
Summary
USPTO granted Patent US12592412B2 to Vehicle Energy Japan Inc. for a lithium ion secondary battery featuring an electrode with an insulating layer containing ceramic particles and holes with diameters of 2.5 μm or more. The patent includes 15 claims and covers the battery structure designed to improve output and responsiveness while maintaining electrolyte replaceability near the active material.
What changed
USPTO issued Patent US12592412B2 to Vehicle Energy Japan Inc. for a lithium ion secondary battery technology. The patent claims an electrode assembly comprising a negative electrode foil, negative electrode mixture layer, and insulating layer containing ceramic particles, with holes (puddles) of 2.5 μm or larger diameter at the interface. Filed February 25, 2019 as Application 17058234, the grant includes 15 claims covering the specific battery construction and method of production.
This patent grant establishes enforceable intellectual property rights in the US for the battery technology. Companies developing or manufacturing lithium ion batteries with ceramic particle insulating layers should review the patent claims to assess potential infringement risks and consider whether licensing discussions with Vehicle Energy Japan are necessary before commercializing similar technology.
What to do next
- Conduct freedom-to-operate analysis to assess potential patent infringement exposure
- Review product designs for ceramic particle insulating layer technology
- Consider licensing negotiations with Vehicle Energy Japan if potentially infringing

Abstract
It is an object to provide a lithium ion secondary battery that ensures a replaceability of an electrolyte in a proximity of an active material and is excellent in output and responsiveness. The lithium ion secondary battery includes an electrode that includes a negative electrode foil, a negative electrode mixture layer disposed on a surface of the negative electrode foil, and an insulating layer disposed on a surface of the negative electrode mixture layer. The insulating layer contains ceramic particles. On the surface of the negative electrode mixture layer facing a border between the insulating layer and the negative electrode mixture layer, a plurality of holes (puddles) having diameters of 2.5 μm or more are provided.
