USPTO Patent Application: Wireless Power Transfer Misalignment Detection
Summary
The USPTO has published a patent application (US20260081484A1) for a system and method to detect and correct misalignment in wireless power transfer systems, particularly for vehicles and roadways. The application was filed by Purdue Research Foundation.
What changed
This document is a USPTO patent application (US20260081484A1) detailing a method for detecting and correcting misalignment between transmitter coils in roadways and receiver coils in vehicles during wireless power transfer. The proposed system measures current/voltage in receiver coils, analyzes magnitude and phase, uses symmetrical component analysis to determine positive and negative sequence components, and then calculates misalignment to provide correction signals.
This patent application does not impose any new regulatory obligations or compliance requirements on regulated entities. It represents a novel technological development in the field of wireless power transfer for vehicles. Compliance officers should note this as a technological advancement rather than a regulatory change impacting their current operations.

Abstract
A method of correcting misalignment between two or more transmitter coils embedded in a roadway and two or more receiver coils in a vehicle includes measuring current or voltage in two or more receiver coils when energized by two or more transmitter coils based on electromagnetic coupling between the two or more transmitter coils and the two or more receiver coils, sampling the measured current or voltage, determining magnitude and phase of the sampled current or voltage, using symmetrical component analysis to determine positive and negative sequence components, determining the two or more receiver coils misalignment with respect to the two or more transmitter coils based on the determined positive and negative sequence components, and providing position correction signals or instructions for the two or more receiver coils based on the determined misalignment.
