Nordic Baltic Leaders Pledge NOK 4.8B for Ukraine Energy Security

The eight Nordic and Baltic leaders gathered in Kyiv on 24 February 2026 to mark four years since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Norway announced it will provide NOK 4.8 billion in 2026 to support Ukraine's energy security, including purchasing gas and repairing and protecting energy infrastructure, as part of a total commitment of NOK 16.5 billion to Ukraine's energy sector from 2022-2026. The leaders issued a joint statement condemning Russia's war of aggression and identifying five key areas of continued support.

Norway and Belgium Sign CO₂ Pipeline Transport Agreement

Norway and Belgium signed a bilateral agreement in Stavanger on 26 March 2026 enabling cross-border CO₂ transport by pipeline from Belgium to storage sites on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. The agreement builds on existing gas pipeline governance structures and supports a joint Equinor-Fluxys initiative to develop a CO₂ pipeline with a land-based terminal in Belgium. It provides a legal framework for European industrial decarbonisation and large-scale offshore CO₂ storage, but imposes no immediate compliance obligations on regulated entities.

Energy Minister Receives Norwegian Nuclear Commission Report

Minister of Energy Terje Aasland received the Norwegian Nuclear Commission report addressing nuclear power as a possible energy source in Norway, with the report now sent for public consultation until October 8, 2026. The commission, appointed in June 2024 under chair Kristin Halvorsen, examined whether nuclear power is suitable for the Norwegian power system, costs, land and environmental impacts, waste issues, and nuclear safety. Ten notifications have been submitted proposing nuclear power plants in several locations, including Svalbard, with an environmental impact assessment established in February 2026 for Taftøy Næringspark in Aure and Heim municipalities.
