Intermittent Generation Does Not Increase NZ Electricity Price Volatility
The New Zealand Electricity Authority (EA) has published research findings showing that intermittent generation does not increase five-minute price volatility in the national electricity market. The analysis examined five-minute spot price data from 2021–2024, comparing periods of high intermittent generation against the full dataset and finding no evidence of elevated price swings. The EA concluded that other factors such as demand variability and unexpected plant outages are more significant drivers of price volatility than intermittent generation levels.
New Solar Export Rules Set 10kW Default
The New Zealand Electricity Authority has implemented new rules establishing a 10 kilowatt default threshold for solar exports to electricity networks. The rules replace previous export limits and create a standardised approach for households and businesses exporting solar power to the grid. Solar system owners should review their registration status and ensure their installations comply with the new 10kW default setting.
