What changed

The Maryland Public Service Commission has announced two public hearings to solicit feedback on Washington Gas Light's proposed rate increase. The utility is seeking to raise annual revenues by $82.5 million, which is projected to increase the average residential customer's bill by approximately 5.3%. The commission is accepting public input through virtual hearings on March 24 and April 7, 2026, as well as written comments submitted via the commission's website or by mail until June 1, 2026.

Compliance officers for entities involved in the energy sector, particularly those operating in Maryland, should note this proceeding. While this notice pertains to public hearings and comment submission, the underlying rate case (Case No. 9849) is a substantive regulatory action. Stakeholders interested in the outcome should ensure public comments are submitted by the respective deadlines to influence the commission's decision, which is expected by late July 2026. Failure to participate or submit comments may result in a rate increase being approved without full consideration of stakeholder concerns.

What to do next

  1. Submit written comments by June 1, 2026, or register to attend public hearings on March 24 or April 7, 2026.
  2. Monitor Case No. 9849 for further proceedings and the final commission decision by late July 2026.
