EPO Patent Publication EP4712298A1: Charging Control Method
Summary
The European Patent Office has published patent application EP4712298A1 concerning a charging control method for devices, apparatus, vehicle devices, and vehicles. The patent, filed by Great Wall Motor Company Limited, details a method to prevent damage to proprietary protocol chips by ensuring proper power chip initialization before charging.
What changed
This document is a publication of a European patent application (EP4712298A1) related to a charging control method and apparatus, as well as vehicle-borne charging devices and vehicles. The invention, assigned to Great Wall Motor Company Limited, focuses on a method that ensures a power chip in a charging device completes its initialization process before initiating charging. This is achieved by comparing the current charging protocol with a target protocol, triggering initialization, acquiring status information, and then proceeding with charging using a target proprietary protocol chip only after successful initialization. The primary goal is to prevent runaway currents that could damage proprietary protocol chips.
While this is a patent publication and not a regulatory rule imposing direct compliance obligations on companies, it signifies technological innovation in the electric vehicle and charging sector. Companies involved in developing or manufacturing charging devices, vehicle charging systems, or proprietary protocol chips should be aware of this patented technology. Compliance officers in the automotive and electronics manufacturing sectors may wish to monitor patent landscapes for potential intellectual property considerations or future technology integration requirements.

Abstract
The present invention relates to a charging control method and apparatus, a vehicle-mounted charging device, and a vehicle, the method includes: determining a target proprietary protocol chip corresponding to a device parameter of a device to be charged; triggering an initialization of a power chip in the charging device based on a comparison between a currently running charging protocol of a charging device and a target charging protocol to change the currently running charging protocol to the target charging protocol; acquiring status information of the power chip; triggering the charging device to charge the device to be charged using the target proprietary protocol chip after the status information indicates that the initialization of the power chip has been completed. This method ensures that the charging device is triggered to charge the device to be charged only after the power chip has completed the initialization, preventing the charging device from generating a runaway current and thus avoiding damage to the proprietary protocol chip from the runaway current.
