Summary

The Department of Defense (DoD) has proposed a new information collection, the Surviving Family Member Survey, to assess satisfaction with casualty assistance programs. The public has until April 27, 2026, to submit comments on the proposal.

What changed

The Department of Defense (DoD), through the OUSD(P&R), has published a 60-day notice for a proposed information collection, the "Department of War Surviving Family Member Survey" (OMB Control Number 0704-0660). This survey aims to evaluate the effectiveness and family satisfaction with the DoD's casualty assistance, mortuary affairs, and military funeral honors programs. The proposed collection involves 540 respondents, with an estimated annual burden of 270 hours, averaging 30 minutes per response.

Public comments are invited on the necessity, utility, accuracy of burden estimates, and potential improvements for this information collection. Interested parties must submit comments by April 27, 2026, via the Federal eRulemaking Portal or mail. This is an opportunity for affected individuals or households to provide input on the survey's design and impact before it is finalized.

What to do next

  1. Review the proposed Surviving Family Member Survey for potential impact.
  2. Submit comments on the information collection by April 27, 2026, if applicable.
