Summary

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of criminal non-citizens convicted of serious offenses, including manslaughter, sexual assault of a child, and carjacking. The press release highlights that nearly 70% of ICE arrests are individuals with criminal convictions.

What changed

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced the arrest of numerous non-citizens with criminal convictions for serious offenses such as manslaughter, sexual assault of a child, and carjacking. The agency emphasized that a significant majority of its arrests involve individuals convicted of crimes in the United States, framing these actions as critical to community safety.

Compliance officers should note this enforcement action as an indicator of ICE's operational priorities. While this is a press release and not a new regulation, it signals increased enforcement focus on individuals with criminal records. Entities involved in immigration sponsorship or employment verification should ensure rigorous adherence to all immigration laws and reporting requirements to avoid potential scrutiny or penalties related to harboring or employing individuals unlawfully present in the U.S.

What to do next

  1. Review internal processes for verifying immigration status of employees or sponsored individuals.
  2. Ensure compliance with all reporting requirements related to immigration enforcement actions.
