What changed

The Garante per la protezione dei dati personali issued a press release on 23 April 2026 reminding media outlets and websites of their obligations under Italian privacy law and deontological rules when reporting on a Milan luxury escort investigation. The authority specifically addressed the publication of names of individuals connected to the case who are not under investigation, calling for strict adherence to the principle of essentiality of information. This principle requires that the dissemination of personal data be limited to what is strictly necessary for understanding the facts of public interest.

Affected parties, including media outlets, journalists, and website operators, should review their reporting practices when covering investigations involving individuals who are not formal subjects of criminal proceedings. The Garante's reminder signals continued attention to media compliance with data protection standards, particularly regarding the publication of names and personal details that exceed what is necessary for informing the public.
