EDPB Adopts Scientific Research Guidelines, Approves Europrivacy Seal

The European Data Protection Board adopted Guidelines on processing personal data for scientific research purposes and created a dedicated team to accelerate finalization of anonymization guidelines. The Board also adopted two opinions on Europrivacy certification criteria, including one approved as a European Data Protection Seal for international data transfers. The guidelines aim to help researchers navigate GDPR compliance while protecting individuals' fundamental rights.

EDPB Adopts DPIA Template for GDPR Compliance

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has adopted a standardized template for Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), as announced by Malta's Information and Data Protection Commissioner on 16 April 2026. The template is designed to help organisations structure, harmonise, and evidence their DPIA reporting processes in line with GDPR requirements. The adoption follows the EDPB's Helsinki Statement commitment to make GDPR compliance easier and strengthen consistency across Europe, with the template accompanied by an explainer document providing concise guidance on completion.

IDPC Commissioner Ian Deguara's Five-Year Mandate Ends

The Information and Data Protection Commissioner (IDPC) announces that Commissioner Ian Deguara's five-year mandate ends on 23 April 2026. The Government of Malta published a notice in the Government Gazette on 17 April 2026 announcing the appointment of a new Commissioner, effective 24 April 2026. The outgoing Commissioner thanked his team for their dedication and commitment to safeguarding individuals' data protection rights.
