The newly appointed Information and Data Protection Commissioner, Dr Reno Borg, on 22 April 2026 took the oath of office, marking the commencement of a new five year term in accordance with the Data Protection Act (Cap. 586).
Following the expiration of the term of office of the previous Commissioner, Dr Borg has been appointed Information and Data Protection Commissioner in terms of Article 11 of the Data Protection Act, as notified in the Government Gazette.
The appointment is valid for a period of five (5) years with effect from 24 April 2026.
The Commissioner will carry out duties in accordance with the Data Protection Act (Cap. 586), Chapter VI of the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679, the Freedom of Information Act (Cap. 496), the Re Use of Public Sector Information Act (Cap. 546), and other applicable laws of Malta.

Dr Reno Borg has served as a lawyer for over 30 years. He graduated from the University of Malta. Throughout the years Dr Borg worked in the Office of the Attorney General, served as chairman of several state entities, Chairman of BOV and as arbiter under the Social Security Act. He also lectured civil law at the University of Malta.
The Government reiterates its commitment to the protection of personal data, the promotion of transparency, and the effective enforcement of data protection and access to information rights in line with national and European legislation.
