What changed
The Kentucky Attorney General's Office obtained an indictment from a Laurel County Grand Jury against London Mayor Randall Weddle on four counts of excessive campaign contributions (Class D Felonies). The charges include two counts for unlawful contributions exceeding $2,000 (inflation-indexed) to the Andy Beshear for Governor campaign in a single election cycle, and two counts for contributions exceeding $5,000 to the Kentucky Democratic Party within one year. The investigation was conducted by the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance and the Attorney General's Department of Criminal Investigations, with prosecution by the Special Prosecution Unit.
Weddle is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. While this is a criminal case against an individual rather than a regulatory compliance action, political organizations and campaigns should review their contribution tracking systems to ensure cumulative per-donor limits are monitored and reported accurately. The Kentucky Supreme Court's trial publicity rules limit additional public information about the case.
Penalties
Class D Felony charges under Kentucky law; penalties may include imprisonment and fines
