What changed
The Supreme Court of Missouri issued a final disbarment order against attorney John C. Carnes following his guilty plea to federal felony tax evasion. The court had issued a show cause order on March 3, 2026, requiring Respondent to show why discipline should not be imposed under Rule 5.21(g). Respondent did not file a response. The court ordered disbarment, cancellation of his license, and removal from the roll of attorneys.
Missouri-licensed attorneys and legal professionals should note that federal felony convictions, including tax evasion, result in automatic disbarment proceedings under Missouri Rule 5.21(g). Attorneys facing similar disciplinary action must respond to show cause orders. This case underscores that criminal conduct unrelated to legal practice still triggers professional discipline with significant consequences including fees and compliance obligations under Rule 5.27.
Penalties
$2,000 fee payable to Clerk of the Supreme Court of Missouri to the credit of the Advisory Committee Fund, plus taxed costs
