Less than two weeks after the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) 2026 session concluded on 12 March 2026, the results of paper F have been distributed to around 650 candidates.
The foundation paper, which tests declarative knowledge of procedural patent law and claim analysis, was passed by more than 530 candidates in 2026, yielding a pass rate of around 84%. Following the successful completion of the foundation module, which was introduced last year as part of the EQE's progressive structural reform, candidates can now advance to the EQE's four main modules.
The prompt delivery of the latest results reflects the efficiency of the fully digital EQE, introduced in 2021. Meanwhile, EQE reform is introducing a progressive, modular structure that strengthens quality, accessibility, inclusivity and sustainability across the patent system. The new modular design also enables candidates to benchmark their readiness for examination at an early stage of their EQE journey.
Transitional phase successfully completed
The EQE is developed in close collaboration with the patent profession, including the Institute of Professional Representatives before the EPO (epi). This year’s examination sessions marked a notable milestone in the EQE’s 45-year history, introducing papers M1 and M2, which, in addition to paper F, were offered along with the four legacy papers A, B, C, and D. Around 5 000 examinations were successfully concluded, with up to 1 500 candidates sitting EQE online exams simultaneously.
2026 was the final year that legacy papers were offered. Papers M3 and M4 will be sat for the first time in 2027, concluding the transition to the fully modular EQE.
About the reformed EQE
The EQE is a gateway to the European patent attorney profession, testing candidates' fitness to practice as professional representative before the EPO.
Paper F can be sat after one year of professional activity under the supervision of a professional representative before the EPO. It provides early, structured results that reflect foundational legal and analytical abilities, helping candidates pace their learning as they progress to the main papers. After two years of professional experience, candidates can sit M1 and M2, which cover patent analysis and procedural law, and after three years they can sit M3 and M4 to test their advanced knowledge and skills around drafting, reasoning and strategic advice to clients.
