Alabama State Bar Disciplinary Actions and Reprimands
Summary
The Alabama State Bar provides a public listing of attorney disciplinary actions, including private reprimands, public reprimands, suspensions, and disbarments. The website details that disciplinary history is provided for informational purposes and that additional cases will be added over time.
What changed
The Alabama State Bar maintains a public online database of disciplinary actions taken against attorneys. This resource provides information on reprimands, suspensions, disbarments, and surrenders of license, with varying levels of detail depending on the date of the action and whether it was public or non-public. The database is updated periodically, and older cases are added as resources permit.
Attorneys and the public can access this information to understand disciplinary outcomes. While the website provides descriptions and links to read more about specific cases, it cautions that comparisons between cases should be made with care due to differences in circumstances and prior disciplinary history. Requests for complete disciplinary histories can be made in writing to the Disciplinary Clerk.
Source document (simplified)
Disciplinary history is provided for informational purposes only. Most do not include all of the facts and circumstances underlying the imposed discipline. Additional cases will be added as discipline is imposed in the future and older cases will be added as resources allow. You can limit the results using the fields provided below.
The complete disciplinary history of any attorney is available upon request from the Disciplinary Clerk of the Alabama State Bar. Please submit your request in writing to clerk@alabar.org or to P.O. Box 671, Montgomery, AL, 36101. Please only contact clerk@alabar.org for disciplinary history only. For CLE questions, contact cle@alabar.org.
Additional Information The discipline description does not refer to the attorney’s prior disciplinary history and/or the aggravating or mitigating circumstances found pursuant to the Alabama Standards for Imposing Lawyer Discipline. Caution is advised when attempting to compare the discipline imposed against an attorney for a particular violation to the discipline imposed against another attorney for a seemingly similar violation.
Prior to January 1, 2018, the Alabama Rules of Disciplinary Procedure did not allow for publication of discipline on the Alabama State Bar website. Any discipline imposed prior to January 1, 2018, has been edited as possible, to remove any identifying information pertaining to the disciplined attorney. Public discipline issued on or after January 1, 2018, will identify the disciplined attorney. Public discipline includes public probation, public reprimand with general publication, suspension and disbarment. Non-public discipline issued on or after January 1, 2018, will not identify the disciplined attorney.
