Summary

The Alabama State Bar provides a public listing of attorney disciplinary actions, including private reprimands, suspensions, and disbarments. The website details the types of discipline imposed and provides links to read more about specific cases, with a disclaimer that not all facts are included and caution is advised when comparing cases.

What changed

The Alabama State Bar maintains a public online repository of attorney disciplinary actions. This resource lists various forms of discipline, such as private reprimands, surrenders of license, and disbarments, along with the dates they were imposed and brief descriptions. The information is provided for informational purposes, and the Bar notes that not all facts and circumstances are included, advising caution when comparing cases.

Attorneys and legal professionals in Alabama are subject to these disciplinary actions. While the website provides a searchable database, individuals seeking complete disciplinary histories or specific details not published online are directed to contact the Disciplinary Clerk of the Alabama State Bar in writing. The site also clarifies that public discipline issued on or after January 1, 2018, will identify the attorney, while non-public discipline will not.

What to do next

  1. Review the Alabama State Bar's disciplinary history website for any actions pertaining to attorneys practicing in Alabama.
  2. Understand that disciplinary actions may not include all facts or prior history; exercise caution when comparing cases.
  3. Contact the Disciplinary Clerk of the Alabama State Bar in writing for complete disciplinary history if needed.

Penalties

Discipline includes private reprimand, surrender of license, suspension, and disbarment.

Source document (simplified)

Disciplinary history is provided for informational purposes only. Most do not include all of the facts and circumstances underlying the imposed discipline. Additional cases will be added as discipline is imposed in the future and older cases will be added as resources allow. You can limit the results using the fields provided below.

The complete disciplinary history of any attorney is available upon request from the Disciplinary Clerk of the Alabama State Bar.  Please submit your request in writing to clerk@alabar.org or to P.O. Box 671, Montgomery, AL, 36101. Please only contact clerk@alabar.org for disciplinary history only. For CLE questions, contact cle@alabar.org.

Additional Information The discipline description does not refer to the attorney’s prior disciplinary history and/or the aggravating or mitigating circumstances found pursuant to the Alabama Standards for Imposing Lawyer Discipline. Caution is advised when attempting to compare the discipline imposed against an attorney for a particular violation to the discipline imposed against another attorney for a seemingly similar violation.

Prior to January 1, 2018, the Alabama Rules of Disciplinary Procedure did not allow for publication of discipline on the Alabama State Bar website. Any discipline imposed prior to January 1, 2018, has been edited as possible, to remove any identifying information pertaining to the disciplined attorney. Public discipline issued on or after January 1, 2018, will identify the disciplined attorney. Public discipline includes public probation, public reprimand with general publication, suspension and disbarment. Non-public discipline issued on or after January 1, 2018, will not identify the disciplined attorney.
