Summary

Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) has released a departmental notice encouraging pubs and clubs across NSW to prepare for increased Anzac Day patronage on 25 April 2026. The notice reminds venue operators of obligations around responsible alcohol service, crowd management, and traditional two-up gambling, while confirming there are no new trading restrictions beyond existing Liquor Act 2007 provisions. L&GNSW inspectors will be active across metropolitan and regional NSW to monitor compliance with NSW liquor and gaming laws during the commemorative period.

“Our inspectors will be out across the state to ensure venues are serving alcohol responsibly and meeting their obligations under NSW liquor and gaming laws.”

What changed

L&GNSW has published a seasonal advisory notice ahead of Anzac Day 2026 reminding licensed venues of their compliance obligations. The notice confirms that normal liquor trading applies under the Liquor Act 2007 and that no specific trading restrictions are imposed for Anzac Day beyond those under the Retail Trading Act 2008. Venues are encouraged to familiarise themselves with two-up rules, ensure gambling is conducted in traditional format, comply with liquor promotion guidelines, and brief staff ahead of the busy period.

NSW licensed venues should treat this notice as a compliance reminder: inspectors will be conducting spot-checks across the state on 25 April 2026. Venue operators should review their responsible service procedures, crowd management plans, and gambling-related controls before the Anzac Day long weekend.

Venues encouraged to get Anzac Day ready

Published: 23 April 2026 Released by: Liquor & Gaming NSW Listen Liquor & Gaming NSW (L&GNSW) is encouraging pubs and clubs across NSW to prepare for a busy Anzac Day long weekend with increased patronage expected.

Anzac Day is a solemn day and marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

Two-up (PDF 158.91KB) is played on Anzac Day, 25 April, as it was played by Australian soldiers during World War One. While venues do not require a permit to host two-up, they must ensure the game is conducted in its traditional format (PDF 54.63KB) and put appropriate measures in place to safely manage increased patron numbers and the risks associated with alcohol service and gambling.

It’s also essential that all advertising and promotions connected to Anzac Day comply with liquor promotion guidelines (PDF 241.27KB).

L&GNSW Executive Director of Regulatory Operations Dimitri Argeres said inspectors will be active across metropolitan and regional NSW on 25 April.

“Anzac Day is a deeply significant occasion when Australians come together to remember and reflect,” Mr Argeres said.

“With the commemorations marking the beginning of a long weekend this year, many pubs and clubs will experience higher patronage throughout the day.

“Venues must remain vigilant in managing the risks associated with alcohol service, intoxication, crowd numbers and gambling, particularly during peak periods.

“Our inspectors will be out across the state to ensure venues are serving alcohol responsibly and meeting their obligations under NSW liquor and gaming laws.”

Liquor & Gaming NSW encourages venue operators to familiarise themselves with the rules around two-up (PDF 54.63KB) and Anzac Day trading, and to ensure staff are briefed ahead of the busy commemorative period.

There are no specific liquor trading restrictions under the Liquor Act 2007 on Anzac Day. Normal liquor trading applies. However, restrictions do apply to trading hours and conditions under the Retail Trading Act 2008. Further information can be found on the Liquor & Gaming NSW website.
