Swiss National Bank Welcomes Full Capital Backing of Banks' Foreign Participations

The Swiss National Bank issued a press release on 22 April 2026 welcoming measures announced by the Federal Council regarding banking regulation, specifically the full backing of a parent bank's foreign participations with Common Equity Tier 1 (CET1) capital. The SNB stated that this measure is proportionate and resolves a significant weakness in existing regulations exposed by the Credit Suisse crisis. SNB Reports CHF 0.5 Billion Loss in Q1 2026

The Swiss National Bank reports a loss of CHF 0.5 billion for the first quarter of 2026, driven by an CHF 8.2 billion loss on foreign currency positions. This loss was partially offset by a CHF 7.8 billion valuation gain on gold holdings, which increased from CHF 110,919 to CHF 118,400 per kilogram. The Swiss National Bank left its policy rate unchanged at 0% on 19 March 2026. The conditional inflation forecast was revised upward due to rising energy prices driven by the Middle East conflict, with average annual inflation now projected at 0.5% for 2026, 0.5% for 2027, and 0.6% for 2028. The SNB indicated increased willingness to intervene in foreign exchange markets to prevent excessive Swiss franc appreciation that could threaten price stability.
