Summary
The USPTO has granted a patent to State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company for a system and method to generate homeowners insurance quotes using LIDAR data. The technology analyzes LIDAR scans of a home to identify features and characteristics that inform the insurance quote.
What changed
The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted patent US12586135B2 to State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company for a novel method of generating homeowners insurance quotes. The patented system utilizes Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data, collected from LIDAR cameras, to analyze a home's features and characteristics. This analysis directly informs the generation of an electronic insurance quote, representing a technological advancement in property insurance underwriting.
While this is a patent grant and not a regulatory rule imposing new obligations, it signifies a technological development that insurers may adopt. Compliance officers in the insurance sector should be aware of this patent as it may influence future underwriting practices and the adoption of LIDAR technology in property assessments. The patent itself does not impose immediate compliance requirements, but its implementation by insurers could lead to new data collection and analysis standards in the future.
